Pinch Pot you own mug – Step-by-Step Guide
Materials:
Clay
Slip (clay glue) – only needed if adding a handle
Scoring tool or spatula
Sponge
Brush
1. Preparation
Take a ball of clay about the size of a large mandarin.
Roll it into a smooth sphere with no cracks.
Use your thumbs to press a hole into the center of the ball.
2. Shaping the Cup
Use your thumbs and fingers to pinch and rotate the clay evenly.
Gently press upwards while turning the mug in your hand to form a smooth wall.
Ensure the wall thickness is around 5-6 mm throughout the mug.
3. Smoothing and Adjustments
Use a damp sponge to smooth the inside and outside surfaces.
Adjust the shape and make sure the mug sits evenly.
4. Adding a Handle (Optional)
Shape a handle and let it dry slightly so it holds its form.
Score both the mug and the handle where they will connect.
Apply slip, press the handle firmly, and move it slightly back and forth to improve adhesion.
Use a brush to smooth slip around the joint.
5. Finishing Touches
Smooth the surface with a damp sponge and fingers.
Refine any uneven areas or small cracks.
