Make a mug using a mold
“Kvætseteknik” – Step-by-Step Guide
Materials:
Plaster mold
Clay
Slip (clay glue)
Scoring tool or spatula
Sponge
Brush
Optional: Hairdryer
1. Preparation
Choose a plaster mold that matches your desired cup shape.
Make sure the mold is completely dry and clean to prevent the clay from sticking too much.
2. Pinching the Clay into the Mold
Take small pieces of clay and press them into the mold with your fingers.
Continue adding clay, pressing and blending it together to form a smooth surface.
Ensure the cup’s walls have a minimum thickness of 4 mm all around.
Use a damp sponge to smooth and refine the interior surface.
3. Drying and Releasing the Cup
Let the cup dry in the mold until it begins to release on its own.
To speed up the process, use a hairdryer on a low setting—keep it moving to prevent uneven drying.
Once the cup has loosened, carefully remove it from the mold.
Smooth out any cracks or imperfections with a damp sponge.
4. Adding a Handle or Decorations (Optional)
If adding a handle or other decorations, ensure both the cup and the additions are at a similar drying stage (leather-hard).
Score both the cup and the attachment where they will connect.
Apply slip, press the piece firmly onto the cup, and move it slightly back and forth to improve adhesion.
Use a brush to smooth slip around the joint.
5. Finishing Touches
Use a damp sponge to smooth all seams and refine the shape.
